Night Shifts at the Ikeda-kan
2026.08.29
One of the experiences that stuck with me the most during my time working here was the night shift. The idea of taking part in the night shift thrilled me, to say the least. For the first time in my life, I could stay up until 5 a.m. for a good reason.
Beyond that, the benefits of just being up during that time excited me: seeing the cities light up, the distant lightning, and best of all, the sunrise. Although the daytime views are incredible, to me the views at night are unbeatable. It doesn’t feel real, reminding me of nighttime shots of the city from some futuristic anime. The pictures don’t do it justice. You just have to be here to fully appreciate it. The slow flickering of lights almost makes the city feel alive.

Thinking back to that week, I recognize how much I’ve grown here. Even though it has only been a month, a lot has changed. On my first day, I almost passed out from altitude sickness (special thanks to the person who helped me), and now I’ve been able to work without problems, giving me the opportunity to have a test run with the night shift. I originally wasn’t supposed to be part of the night shift, but after showing interest in it I was allowed to.
Of course, it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It gets cold (below 10 C/ 50F) and the wind can get really strong. The worst part? You can’t talk that loudly with your coworkers, but that might just be a me problem. The silence and peace are unique to the night shift. At any other time of the day and it gets busy. So, for the people that want the calmer side of the mountain hut, the night shift here might be perfect for you.
